Every year, on July 22nd, La Maddalena Archipelago hosts a celebration in honor of the patron saint of the town, Santa Maria Maddalena, that is the best known and most important feast day of the year. Since the first days of January, a committee made up of several members and an elected president takes up the task of arranging the religious celebration, also providing numerous cultural, sporting and music events.
On the day of the Saint, her statue is carried on foot from the town’s main church to the port of Cala Gavetta. From here, a procession of boats carries it over the sea to Piazza Comando, where a large crown of flowers is thrown into the water. A procession of believers then brings it back to the church of Santa Maria Maddalena for the blessing.
Like every year, the patronal feast ends at night, with magnificent fireworks that can be admired from all over the south coast of the island, from Punta Tegge to Località Moneta.
